What can we learn from Nehemiah 9:1-7?

On Wednesday, 9th June 2021, Rev. Dr. Stephen A. Sakyi looked at 6 activities that preceded the revival of the Israelites. Explaining four of those points, he said:

  • They assembled (Nehemiah 9:1)

He said if we want to be revived, we need to assemble because there is strength in unity. Thus, he urged us to come together in one mind for God to visit us.

  • When they assembled, they fasted (Nehemiah 9:1)

Here, he looked at what fasting is and how to go about it. He said fasting is the act of humbling the body before God. He said we can fast from morning to afternoon (6-12) or from morning to evening (6-6). Likewise, we can fast for 3 days, 7 days, 21 days and so on. However, he advised against fasting dry for more than 3 days and eating heavy foods after a fast.

  • The Israelites also separated themselves from foreigners (Nehemiah 9:2)

He also looked at how the Israelites separated themselves from foreigners. He said if we want to hear from God, we need to separate ourselves from the crowd. This, according to him, helps us concentrate on what God has for us.

  • The reading of the Word of God (Nehemiah 9:3)

Lastly, he looked at how the Word of God is important to revival. We saw that the word of God opens our minds, shows us our standing with God among others.
